Centre Calls for Regional Energy Cooperation

atlantica_curryAs president of the Atlantica Centre for Energy, Tim Curry has spent plenty of time considering the energy sector in New Brunswick.

So it's natural that he's representing the industry association on an interim task force established in July to harness the potential of the so-called energy hub.

In this conversation, Curry says New Brunswick already has many advantages in the energy sector but should pursue more opportunities for regional co-operation.

BoSox Honour Digby Neck Native

bosox_digbyneckRenovations to the main floor of Jim Prime’s house in New Minas may, depending on the outcome of discussions with his wife, include a hardwood floor with an inlaid Boston Red Sox logo.

Loyal Sox fans in Nova Scotia are, as the saying goes, common as dirt. But Prime, who has attended more than 100 games at Fenway Park, is uncommonly devoted and recently received an uncommon honour from the team and its official fan club.

"They contacted me and asked me if I’d like to become acting lieutenant-governor of Red Sox Nation," said Prime. "There will, down the road, hopefully be a competition to have an elected lieutenant-governor."

Acadian Centre Opens

Rendez-vous de la Baie, a new Acadian cultural and interpretive centre, is open on the Universite Sainte-Anne campus in Church Point.

The Municipality of the District of Clare operates the centre, which has its own entrance, featuring a bright red roof facade jutting from the university’s library building.

Local Seagull Becomes KidLit Star

oscar_seagullFrom her own childhood escapades in Smith’s Cove and listening to her aunt Mary Lou first introduce her to the mischievous bird, Roberta Heembrock was enthralled by the adventures of a little herring gull named ‘Oscar’.

However, it wasn’t until years later that Heembrock typed the last words of Oscar’s adventure. Sitting in her home office in Calgary, the Nova Scotia native put the finishing touches on her first children’s book, Oscar the Herring Gull.

“I first knew I wanted to write this story when my Aunt Mary Lou first introduced me to Oscar, a herring gull, otherwise known as Jethro, when I was eight or nine. She would tell me all kinds of stories about his antics and escapades,” Heembrock said.

Employment Nova Scotia is pleased to announce its call for proposals for 2010-2011 under the program  Works for You.   The deadline for  applications is September 7, 2010.

Works for You is funded under the Canada-Nova Scotia Labour Market Agreement (LMA) between the Government of Canada and the Province of Nova Scotia.

Community Praise for "Pages"

praise_pagesHighlights of Digby’s transportation through the decades was the theme of the Digby Area Theatre Society’s theatrical experience ‘Pages from our Story’, presented to appreciative audiences at the Digby Community Theatre Aug. 4 and 5.

Written and directed by Hal Theriault and Paul Saulnier, ‘Pages from our Story’ wove the subtle details of how Digby came to be, using transportation as a theme.

Theriault said Digby’s history is a varied, vibrant one and it would be impossible to include the many exciting, sometimes joyful or sad and often poignant events that have contributed to making us who we are.

GetConnected

Acadia University and the Nova Scotia Department of Labour and Workforce Development are jointly presenting GetConnected, a program specifically designed to enable rural-based small businesses in Nova Scotia to explore, develop and implement a growth strategy using web-based technologies.

It will give small rural businesses the knowledge they require to make strategic business decisions on when and how to invest in their online presence.

 

The aim of this  interactive, functional program is to provide small business owners with business planning sessions, online learning modules and hands-on skill development activities to assist in the growth strategy of their business.

Drop In For Lunch

drop_in_airportThe Municipality of the District of Digby is giving new meaning to the old expression “Why don’t you drop in for lunch”?

The Municipality will be hosting a fly in lunch and open house at the Digby Municipal Airport August 21st from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

This event will be an opportunity to unveil the new name for the airport, allow, citizens to see the operations on the airport grounds and host general aviation pilots within the region.

Bay of Fundy Popular Cruise Destination

popular_cruiseAlmost 300,000 passengers and crew will visit the city this year generating $30 million in direct expenditures, the Saint John Port Authority announced Tuesday.

Andrew Dixon, vice-president of marketing and development for the port authority, delivered the data in a stakeholders meeting on the future of the industry. He was joined by more than 100 business leaders, members of the tourism industry and representatives of the provincial and federal governments.
