OUR FIRST AMBASSADORS:
THE MI’KMAQ
AND ACADIAN PEOPLES

For thousands of years, the Mi’kmaq have inhabited this region — a strong and proud nation. In 1605, they welcomed the first Europeans: Explorer Samuel de Champlain and his crew sailed through a narrow passage into the spreading panorama of the Annapolis Basin. Near the mouth of the Annapolis River, the French founded Port-Royal, now known as Annapolis Royal. The native Mi'kmaq were quick to share their knowledge of the land and did much to help the newcomers to adapt. The tradition of immigration to this region lives on — our Acadian and Bear River First Nation ambassadors welcome you!
