Why Not Wood?

Posted by kshea in Globe and Mail , biomass , bioenergy , adeda

A very informed and plainspoken article by journalist Neil Reynolds about the use of wood, a primary source of biomass, has just been published of the Globe and Mail.  In great measure, it supports the idea of ADEDA's proposed community energy project, and our region's newly formed co-op to be headed by local woodlot owner, Harold Alexander.

The creative economy in rural Nova Scotia

Posted by kshea in urban refugee , Small Business , Information Age , digby , annapolis , adeda

Urban studies theorist, professor and author, Richard Florida, today spoke with Jillian Findlay on CBC Radio's The Current.  A transplanted American, and now a permanent resident of Canada, Florida talked about the differences between the economic situation here versus the US. He began by remarking that he is "happy that our little nest egg is all in Canadian banks."

We are indeed fortunate that the banking system in this country is stable, and that while we can justifiably gripe about bank fees, I would also argue that our national banks did not succumb to the grandiose greediness that has run rampant in the US.

Most certainly we are witnessing the decline of the old industrial economy.  However, we are perfectly positioned to benefit from the emergence of the knowledge based economy.  The key is creative energy:  identifying it, investing in it, and harnessing it, with the goal to build a stronger, sustainable future.

Words of wisdom for small business

Posted by kshea in Small Business , Sir Richard Branson , Globe and Mail , digby , annapolis , adeda

Sir Richard Branson spoke recently at the Small Business Summit in Toronto.  As one of the world's most innovative and best known entrepreneurs, Branson is quoted by the Globe and Mail as saying, "You have to step back and think, 'What is a business?' It's like a painting ... you want to create something you're proud of and that will make a real difference to people.  If you get that painting right, then somebody may buy it, and if you create this excellent business, somebody may use it."

From hard won experience, he adds, "There's no point in launching something unless it offers a fundamentally better experience."

Excellent advice for us all, I think.

The Artful Blogger

Posted by kshea in digby , annapolis , adeda

Here we are, a small -- and spectacular -- region on the Atlantic coast of Canada.  It's a gorgeous autumn afternoon, sunny and warm.  Today at the Annapolis Digby Economic Development Agency, we've got a boardroom full of local entrepreneurs and administrators learning all about blogging.  Everyone's off and running with new blogs -- hookers and hikers alike -- promoting their individual business concerns and, ultimately, our region.

One of our local bloggers, Lauren Soloy of Sleeping Forest Studios, settled here last year.  She and her husband Jai departed Vancouver the day after their wedding and found their way to Bridgetown.  Lauren told us this morning how her blog is actually attracting new residents to the area.  She's not a real estate agent, she's simply an artist and urban refugee who has happily found her place in rural -- connected -- Nova Scotia.

Like Lauren, you can plant seeds here then watch as your life grows in new and exciting ways you never thought possible.
