An official with Waste Check says the authority is happy with the progress that is being made towards development of a strategic plan for the organization.
Already a leader in waste diversion, Waste Check is looking to develop a plan that will help it further reduce the amount of garbage produced in Region 7, which encompasses Digby and Yarmouth counties, the area Waste Check covers.
The process includes consultation with various sectors. An initial meeting with representatives of these sectors was held last month.
“That went very well,” said Amy Hillyard, waste reduction coordinator with Waste Check. “Each (sector) representative was able to make it to the meeting. We got some really good feedback from them and advice on how to move forward.”
The sectors involved include hospitality, retail, food service, agriculture, forestry, construction, health care, education, waste-hauling companies and harbour authorities.
The idea was for last month’s meeting to help set the stage for further discussions with people from specific sectors. These sessions are to be held in late May and early June.
The timetable for development of Waste Check’s strategic plan includes a final committee meeting scheduled for June 21.
“We hope to have a plan finalized by that meeting,” Hillyard said. “ The next step would be to take that plan and bring it to our board to get their approval.”
