Annapolis County council is calling it an early Christmas present to the residents of Annapolis and Digby counties—a YMCA.
Council voted Dec. 20 in favour of the Fundy YMCA establishing its roots at Cornwallis Park in the former Lifeplex facility.
The Fundy YMCA capital campaign has so far raised $470,984, about 94 per cent of its goal of $500,000. The remainder of the campaign will be done throughout Annapolis and Digby counties during the community division of the capital campaign.
Annapolis County warden Reg Ritchie said council is confident that the campaign will reach its goal, and said the go-ahead is an exciting and wonderful day for everyone Annapolis and Digby counties.
“After two years of hard work and unbelievable effort, we are moving forward with a Fundy YMCA,” he said.
“We are hoping to have the YMCA operating in the spring of 2012, with the Grand Opening celebration sometime in June. It feels great to be able to say that.”The capital campaign will now move into the community division in order to raise the remaining funds. This will involve community meetings throughout the area, recruiting people to help with the campaign, and an enormous drive to reach that final goal.
The next steps to this project involve confirming the contract between the Annapolis County and YMCA, the development of building plans, and the construction stage.
