Sign of Things to Come

evergreen_signNow anyone on the way to Kingston and back can see what’s going on at Evergreen Theatre in Margaretsville.

Evergreen’s new sign, positioned on Highway 1 at the base of the Stronach Mountain Road, was designed by Ellie Kennard and the Old Sign and Birdhouse Company, of Canning. It was financed mostly by a donation from Royal Bank Middleton.

David O’Leary, Evergreen’s coordinator, says he hopes the sign will remind people there is a nearby concert venue featuring some of the best live performances and musical entertainment from across the country and beyond.

Over the years, the Evergreen stage has hosted the likes of Jill Barber, Sarah Pound, Thom Swift, Melanie Doane, Ron Hynes, Bruce Guthro, and Garnet Rogers; as well as international talents like El Viento Flamenco, Yadong Guan, and Chirgilchin.

The new sign will offer information on upcoming shows and gives general directions to the theatre.

The next concert will be a Musique Royale presentation of Les Boreades, on August 10 at 8 p.m.

This ensemble may be best known for its lively renditions of Beatles classics, performed faithfully with a Baroque flair. Founded by Francis Colpron in 1991, Les Boréades de Montréal takes an interpretative approach in keeping with the spirit of the Baroque era, by adhering to the rules of performance practice of the past and playing on period instruments.

Each year, Les Boréades gives a series of concerts at Montréal's historic Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours chapel. The musicians have also performed at the Frick Collection of New-York, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Salle Gaveau in Paris, Vancouver Festival, Musikfest Bremen, and at the Alter Musik Regensburg.

“Critics and audiences alike in Canada and abroad have been unanimous in hailing the group's energy and spontaneity as well as its theatrical, expressive and elegant playing, indicative of a unique flair for Baroque aesthetics,” according to a release on the Evergreen website.

Then, at 8 p.m. on August 21, Papilio takes the stage. This neo-traditional Halifax-based band captures the organic spirit and drive of traditional Celtic, Folk, Nordic, and World music while giving it a singular and contemporary twist.

This progressive neo-traditional trio invites the listener on a musical journey through Ireland, Scotland, the Maritimes, Brittany (the Celtic region of France), Galicia/Asturia (Celtic regions of Spain), Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, and beyond, adding a sprinkle of folk ballads and a few original.

In October, The Sultans of String and Garnet Rogers are lined up. For more information on Evergreen Theatre and its upcoming shows, or to book tickets visit www.evergreentheatre.ca , or call 825-6834.
